Can a Gas Fireplace Run All Day & Night

People who love the ambiance of their gas fireplaces often wonder if it’s the type of appliance that can be run continuously around the clock or at least for extended periods. The answer depends on the type of gas fireplace you’re using. Fire N’ Stone of Tilton, NH, would like to share some helpful information on this topic.

Several different types of appliances are referred to as “gas fireplaces,” but not all are created equal. The three main types include:

  • Direct-vent gas fireplaces are installed in a wall within the home and rely on a dedicated vent pipe to channel combustion gases outside the house.
  • Vent-free gas fireplaces also are installed in a wall but are designed to require no venting system.
  • Gas fireplace inserts are placed in the firebox of an existing masonry fireplace and are vented through a pipe that runs up the existing chimney.

The main concern with gas fireplace operation

Today’s gas fireplaces are made safer and more efficient than ever. But that doesn’t mean precautions shouldn’t be taken. Natural gas and propane are both potentially deadly to people and pets, so it’s critical that your fireplace – whatever type it is – gets regular inspections by trained and licensed fireplace technicians.

Models for continuous fireplace use

As to running the fireplace, the two types that are vented – direct-vent models and fireplace inserts – can be operated around the clock providing they have secure glass doors that seal properly when closed. Assuming your fireplace and its components are in good shape, the toxic exhaust materials will leave the fireplace and be channeled through the vent pipes to the outside air.

Model for periodic fireplace use

Vent-free gas fireplaces, however, are built to run periodically, usually for several hours at a time. In some ways they’re like the oven in your kitchen: you would never (or should never) leave this appliance on around the clock. The reason is that the carbon monoxide produced during combustion will remain in the home and could harm those who live there. This isn’t to say vent-free fireplaces are dangerous, rather they aren’t designed to be on all the time like their vented counterparts. If you have an unvented gas fireplace, the literature from the manufacturer that came with it will give you guidelines on how long the unit can be run. If you have no paperwork, consult with a fireplace repair company or inspector, who can tell you what you need to know about your particular model. Fireplace professionals also can give you guidelines on how to use the unit and what’s necessary to keep it maintained and working efficiently.
