Chimney Flashing

Chimney flashing may seem like a minor component in your overall chimney system, but it’s one of the most critical because of the job it does. When flashing is damaged, rusted, deteriorated or missing all together, your home and the breast of your chimney below the roof is at risk of serious and expensive damage.

chimney flashing repair in Moultonborough New HampshireWhat Is Chimney Flashing?

Flashing is the strips of material – typically metal or lead– that skirt the base of your chimney stack where it connects with the roof. When properly installed, flashing adheres securely to the masonry at its top and the roof at its bottom.

The Purpose of Flashing

Chimney flashing has one simple but important job: to keep water from rain and melting snow from draining down between the chimney and roof. Infiltrating water can eventually cause chimney decay as well as significant damage to any home building materials it comes into contact with.

Another big concern is mold growth. Mold thrives in damp, unventilated areas. When mold begins beneath the roof and behind walls, it can create a large infestation without the homeowner ever knowing about it.

Chimney masonry damage, rotting of building materials and mold growth are all sizeable problems. Fortunately, preventing these things from happening because of chimney flashing damage issues is fairly simple and straightforward.

Flashing Repair

Fire N’ Stone of Tilton, NH, performs a lot of flashing repair for our customers throughout New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. We’ll first inspect your flashing to determine if it can, in fact, be repaired. If it can’t, we’ll replace it with strong new material and properly seal it against the roof and chimney.

Often the repair of flashing involves a compound called FlashSeal made by ChimneySaver, a leader in chimney protection solutions. FlashSeal is widely used in the chimney services industry.

Available in black, brown or white, FlashSeal creates a flexible, waterproof membrane that quickly stops leaks in flashing material and in areas where the flashing should seal tightly against the roof and chimney masonry.

Make it a point to inspect your chimney flashing once or twice a year and after any major weather event such as high-powered wind storms and hail storms. When made of a quality material and installed correctly, chimney flashing will last for many years. But it won’t last forever.

If you notice warping or gaps in your flashing, or if the surfaces are rusted or eaten away, give us a call so we can resolve the issue. A large portion of the money spent every year on chimney repairs could have been saved had the homeowner acted quickly at the first sign of trouble.
