Problems with Your Gas Fireplace?

People love gas fireplaces for many reasons, not the least of which is the simple maintenance requirements compared to maintaining a wood fireplace. Still, gas fireplaces do need some maintenance and periodic repairs to keep them working safely and efficiently.

When you’re having trouble with your gas fireplace, there are a few things you can do to investigate the problem and get it working again.

A fireplace that won’t fire up is no fun. Fortunately, the problem often is an easy fix. In other cases, it’s best to have a gas fireplace technician take a look.

Common reasons a gas fireplace fails to start:

  • Dead batteries
  • Tripped circuit breaker
  • Propane tank is empty
  • Problems with the natural gas line
  • Problems with utility’s natural gas supply
  • Pilot light has gone out
  • Issues with the thermocouple or thermopile (electricity generators needed to power the appliance)
  • Thermostat set too low

With a little common sense and the help of your owner’s manual, you likely can resolve many of these problems. Gas-line damage and thermocouple/thermopile malfunction should be evaluated by a professional.

The fireplace is sending unpleasant odors into the home

This may or may not be a problem. If your fireplace is brand new, the odors you’re smelling likely are caused by painted-surface burning, which is normal with a new appliance. However, if the odor smells anything like gas, stop using your fireplace and contact a qualified repair person.

For other types of smells, you might want to check your vent pipe to make sure no small animals have entered the space and died inside. This is more common than you might think and will definitely send foul odors into your home.

The fireplace is making weird noises

A little operational noise is normal for most prefab gas fireplaces. More pronounced noises such as grinding, rumbling or roaring are not normal and could be the result of trouble with your pilot light, blower or burner. Have these noises checked out by a technician before using the fireplace again.

A well-built and properly maintained gas fireplace will create minimal soot buildup, which is pretty easy to remove by periodic wiping down. Large amounts of soot on the fireplace’s interior components may indicate an inefficient mix of gas and oxygen or a burner assembly that’s clogged.

Obstacles or severe particulate buildup inside your fireplace’s vent pipe also can cause excess soot buildups due to sluggish drafting. Your owner’s manual likely will tell you how to address most soot problems. If you’re still unsure, call an expert.
