From Frame to Finish, We Do It All!

National Fire Prevention Week

Fall is here, and that means winter isn’t far behind. As temperatures start dropping and families gather around their fireplaces, wood stoves, or other heating devices, National Fire Protection Week reminds us to protect what matters most—our homes and our loved ones.

Home fires account for more than 75% of all civilian fire deaths, and over 2,600 Americans die in home fires every year, according to the National Fire Prevention Association.

Chimney Safety and preventing fires from Fire N' Stone of Tilton New Hampshire

At Fire N Stone, we want you and your family to enjoy your fireplace and for everyone to be safe. Here are some helpful tips to ensure that happens.

Book a Certified Chimney Inspection and Cleaning

The NFPA advises having your chimney inspected and cleaned annually. Removing creosote buildup, an incredibly flammable byproduct of burning wood, can drastically reduce the chance of a chimney fire and ensure proper venting.

Only Burn Seasoned Firewood

Never burn unseasoned or green firewood because it increases the smoke and creosote accumulation. Properly dried hardwood like oak or maple (seasoned for 6-12 months) burns cleaner and safer.

Install a Durable Chimney Cap

A sturdy chimney cap prevents debris, rain, and animals from entering the flue and stops sparks from escaping onto your roof. This minimizes fire risk and maintenance issues.

Test Smoke and CO Alarms Regularly

Nearly three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke detectors. Ensure you have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level and near sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries annually.

Maintain a Safe Fire Zone

Keep all flammable materials, like rugs, curtains, or furniture, at least three feet away from your fireplace. Always use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen to ensure no flying embers get into your living room.

Never Leave the Fire Unattended

Falling asleep with embers can be just as risky as stepping out mid-flame. Always completely extinguish fires before leaving the room or going to bed.

Know the Warning Signs of Chimney Damage

Catching chimney damage before it worsens is key to preventing fires and other mishaps. Here’s what to watch for.

  • Crumbling bricks or mortar
  • White stains (efflorescence)
  • Smoke entering the room when the fire’s burning
  • Rusted damper or firebox
  • Bits of tile or flue lining in the firebox

Any of these is a red flag, and you should call a chimney professional immediately.

Bonus Reminder: Safely Dispose of Fireplace Ash

Store cooled ashes in a sealed metal container kept safely outside and at least 10 feet from your home. Hot embers in a plastic container, or placed too close to the house, can spark accidental fires in seconds.
